- The challenge -
Capturing the Magic
To create a distinctive visual identity for a well-known text without overwhelming the production or competing with performance.
The design needed to feel cohesive across costume, backdrop and music while remaining achievable within practical staging constraints.
- The approach -
Colour and Costume Collaboration
Working closely with wardrobe, I helped establish a defined colour palette to differentiate the worlds of the play, court, lovers and forest, while maintaining overall tonal harmony.
Colour became a storytelling tool, subtly guiding audience perception and reinforcing shifts in mood and hierarchy.
Scenic Design
I designed the backdrop and scenic elements to support fluid staging and visual continuity.
Rather than creating heavy or literal scenery, the design focused on atmosphere and suggestion, allowing performance and lighting to remain central.
Original Music and Composition
I wrote and composed original music for the production to enhance transitions and underscore key moments.
The score was developed to align with the established colour and visual tone, contributing to a unified sensory experience rather than functioning as standalone decoration.
Promotional Photography
I photographed the production for marketing and promotional use.
The imagery was styled to reflect the established visual language, ensuring consistency between stage experience and public-facing material.
- The OUTCOME -
Cohesive Aesthetic Identity
The integration of costume, set and music created a unified visual and tonal language across the production
Cross-Disciplinary Design
The project demonstrated the value of collaboration across departments, with design decisions reinforcing rather than competing with performance.
Expanded Creative Scope
This work reflects an approach that considers theatre holistically — visual, auditory and atmospheric elements working together in service of narrative.
